Just popping in quickly to mention a few things that need urgently mentioning.  I’m aware that my blog at the moment is really just a combination of promotion and social calendar, and I promise I’ll get to some more writerly writing soon.  Notably a piece about New York.  It’s just that life is busy at the moment and thinks keep popping up.  I’m also aware that the blog design could do with a bit of modernisation.  I will get there, it’s just that I’m so busy writing things.  Here are the things I have to mention:

Notably, and most wonderfully, I’m nominated, alongside Moffat, in the Constellation Awards, Canada’s fan awards for excellence in science fiction television and film, in the category of Best Script.  All Canadian citizens can vote, or those attending the Polaris conventions.  Hmm, I know quite a few Canadians…

At 11.30am this Saturday, the 3rd May, I’ll be popping in for Free Comic Book Day to officially open Cheltenham’s new comic shop, Proud Lion:

Comic Book Resources have put up six lovely full colour pages of art from the first issue of Captain Britain and MI-13, available May 14/May 15 in your local comic shop, depending on if you’re in the US or UK:

And there's a new interview about the series up at Newsarama:

On Sunday, I’ll be on one of the teams, probably the Third Row Fandom team (unless I get a better offer), who won last time (I love it how SFX coming second is mentioned below!), at the Sci-Fi London Pub Quiz:

And I’m looking forward to one of the pivots around which my year turns, the Clarke Awards, tomorrow night, at which I always see so many friends.  So I may see some of you on Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday.  Until then, Cheerio!

I was overjoyed to hear recently that Cheltenham *finally* has a new comic store so many years after "Heroes for Sale" closed up shop... my first ever proper local comic shop, where I had a regular folder and everything. Oddly the new shop is, I believe in the location of the small highly dodgy videogame store I used to work in where the only thing dodgier than the Boss was some of the videos he kept in a room upstairs. Oh the innocence of youth and the desperation of a student needing a part time job. I hope it has every success, Cheltenham needs more sources of geekery. I gather its been launched by a former Forbidden Planet person from... Bristol? Or Birmingham. I forget what I was told.
Already got Capt. Britain and MI-13 on my folder list, looking forward to it.

Those preview pages are gorgeous, although I note CBR think they're by Leonad Kirk, whoever he is.

And sorry, after snapping out the immortal line "Chap with wings. Five rounds rapid." Lethbridge-Stewart trumps all.

I know, it's beautifully done isn't it? Had me in stitches the first time I saw it. I thought you'd appreciate it too.

The squee can be heard loudly over at [info]scans_daily regarding CB& MI:13, sir. The CBR preview article was linked to on scans_daily yesterday and much happiness was heard across comics fandom. (Along with a robust and lively discussion about the pros and cons of killing Skrulls that promises to be the central theme of the Marvel Experience this summer, so be forewarned. Not everyone hates Skrulls, apparently. :-) )

I'm very much looking forward to the first issue and even squeed about it on my own journal today.

Also, I read the Vision one shot and I want to thank you for having Vizh sound like Vizh. I will say that that issue was a very emotionally grueling experience for me (and not a few other people, judging by who I've spoken to about it in real life). That issue broke my heart. Way to twist the knife in the hearts of all the sad Wanda/Vizh shippers out there who held onto slender hope that someday he'd be emotionally affected by her again.

*cries*

I do hope that you get to work with Vision again!

Thanks, I'm loving the reactions. And thanks for the recognition that it's actually a writer's job to create emotionally grueling experiences. If I said I'm proud to have broken your heart that would sound perverse, but I *am* actually very proud of creating a big emotional effect like that. Although it's important that the effect on Vizh/Wanda shippers is incidental, and not the point of the exercise. That *would* be cruel.

I suppose it's the perspective of the writer. I'd certainly rather read something authentic and crafted to be emotionally mature, and if that's what you mean, very much agreed. As I said once here before, though, if a particular piece of ongoing work becomes unceasing attempts to stir up darker emotions in the readers, I lose interest and go back to reading Andrew Vachss, because I know Burke doesn't have a chance in hell for anything resembling happiness, but that's the whole point of the series. :-)

Anyway, I'm looking forward to CB&MI:13!

Hmm, as a Canadian currently resident in the UK (er, born and bred in the UK, but still apparently classed as a 'returning Canadian' for immigration purposes), I wonder whether I can vote in those awards? Needs investigation, I feel!

Although you really must arrange not to write DW scripts in the same year as Moffat - I'm really very torn now!

Thanks for wanting to investigate that possibility!
